Educators at St. Junipero Serra Catholic School recognize that religious education is not limited to books and classroom experiences. In harmony with the Religion curriculum of the Diocese of Orange, a retreat encounter for each grade level is offered. Each retreat is unique in theme and introduces students to an aspect of their Catholic faith, as a continuance of classroom instruction. This year our students plan to visit various Catholic High Schools, Retreat Centers, and local parishes to participate in this faith building exercise. Mass will be celebrated at each retreat and special attention will be given to the Liturgy of the Eucharist as we prepare our students for our new St. Serra Chapel.
CLASS RETREAT SCHEDULE 2017-18
✞ 1st grade will be attending Santiago de Compostela Parish. The pastors will formulate a “teaching mass” by explaining each mass part as it is celebrated. Students will also rotate throughout various stations within the church which will include an overview of the; Sacristy, The Stations of the Cross, The Confessionals, and Tabernacle.
✞ 2nd grade students will attend the Sacred Heart of Jesus Retreat Center in preparation for their First Holy Communion next spring. Students will participate in various lessons and activities explaining the meaning behind the Holy Eucharist.
✞ 3rd grade will celebrate their annual retreat at San Francisco Solano Parish directed by their teaching staff. The theme of their retreat will be “God’s Love”. The students will make a rosary in the shape of a heart which will be blessed by Father before prayer. Students will also celebrate mass and learn more about God's endless love.
✞ 4th grade students will venture to J. Serra High School and will participate in a day long retreat directed by the Campus Ministers of the school. The day will include skits, break-out sessions, reflection, and song.
✞ 5th grade students will host the Peer Ministry Group from Santa Margarita High School. This group will come to Serra and lead them through a faith filled day, modeling for our students the graces they have received by following our Lord.
✞ 6th grade students are in for a very special retreat this school year. For the first time, (NET) National Evangelization Team will visit Serra. This nationally recognized retreat team is designed to present our students with the truth of who they are as God’s children and how true joy and meaning in life are found by accepting Christ’s gift of salvation and living as His disciple.
✞ 7th grade students will venture to J. Serra High School and will participate in a day long retreat directed by the Campus Ministers of the school. The day will include skits, break-out sessions, reflection, and song.
✞ 8th grade students will host the Peer Ministry Group from Santa Margarita High School. This group will come to Serra and lead them through a faith filled day, modeling for our students the graces they have received by following our Lord. This retreat will focus on several testimonials as this ministry group prepares our students for their high school religion experience.
“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and rest for a while.” Mark 6:31
The Communion of Saints
At St. Junipero Serra Catholic each grade level selected a patron saint for their classroom. A small ceramic image of the saint was blessed and is now displayed in each classroom. Because the Church is confident that these saints or “holy ones” are now in heaven, we urge our students not only to imitate their holiness, but also to ask for their assistance. The Communion of Saints is the fellowship, and the sharing, of the saints. God allows them to see and hear what He sees and hears, so they can hear the requests we may make of them. As the saying goes, “Imitation is the sincerest form of praise.” And so we imitate the saints, to follow their example of holiness. In the end, that’s the best way to honor them.
