Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books (BOB) Club

What is BOB: It is a voluntary reading incentive program for 4th and 5th Grade students. The purpose is to foster a LOVE of READING and to encourage students to read, analyze and discuss a variety of good books at Virtual Book Club meetings and have fun while competing at a local tournament with peers. Each school participating may have up to two teams of five participants. All questions will be asked by a judge and will begin with “In which book…” and the answer you provide will be the title earning 3 pts and author  earning an additional 2 pts of the appropriate book. The team with the most points at the end of the Tournament wins a trophy for their school.

When does BOB take place: BOB will have mandatory weekly in-person meetings as of September 2021 until April 2022 in the library during 4th/5th grade lunches and will meet inside Serra Library, (students are to bring their own lunch). The schedule of meetings and important dates will be located on the BOB/Library Schedule Serra Library page.

Who can participate in BOB: All interested 4th and 5th grade students are allowed to attend Book Club meetings,  All students planning on attending the Book Club meetings must see Ms. Bummer in the library to sign up or contact her by email at ebummer@serraschool.org

What are the Student expectations: BOB students must attend in-person weekly meetings, read weekly assigned books, complete assigned reading books logs, and be ready for book discussions.

What are the Parent expectations: It is highly recommended for parents to volunteer their time to help the team prepare by reading the books assigned to the students, and by sitting in weekly virtual meetings to help the BOB Team.

What is the cost of joining BOB:
  • To participate in the BOB Book Club is free, so your time and effort will be key components in succeeding in the Tournament!
  • St. Junipero Serra will pay for the registration fee.
