Welcome New Families!
We are so thrilled you are here with us at St. Junipero Serra Catholic School! As the Lead Ambassador for the 2017-2018 school year and a member of the PTO Board, I am eager and excited to meet every one of you as you begin this new chapter.
My family moved to Southern California from New Jersey in August of 2012. After my oldest completed kindergarten and the first half of 1st grade in the public schools, it was evident to my husband and I that our children needed so much more than what was currently available to them. We still did not know much about the area or the schools, but we had driven by St. Serra regularly. It was a beacon of hope for us. I placed a call to St. Serra one desperate October morning to find that there were only two available spots in the entire school at the time, and one of them happened to be in 1st grade. That was enough of a sign for us!
As two Catholic-educated adults, from Kindergarten through high school, then on to Jesuit Colleges and Graduate Schools, it was not too big of a leap of faith to move our son to St. Serra. Soon after, my daughter (and her unique set of learning challenges) joined her brother and each of them, with personality and needs a galaxy apart, have grown by leaps and bounds spiritually and academically. I know they are where they need to be and I can’t wait to see them continue to bloom as they begin 5th and 2nd grade.
The mission of the St. Serra Ambassador Program is to ensure that all new families are welcomed and integrated into the community. We consider this program a ministry to which experienced St. Serra parents have been called to serve both parents and students for the duration of their inaugural school year.
My goal in this ministry is to make sure that every new family, in its unique construct and with its distinct needs, is wholly aware of everything that St. Serra has to offer, both spiritually and academically. I want you and your children to experience the small-school feeling that our community generates, while making sure that you are taking advantage of all of the benefits that a larger school can offer.
Just as important is to make sure that St. Serra benefits from the gift of you and your family. The fabric of St. Serra is ever-changing and as you begin your time here, you will soon see how every individual family, parent and child weaves their thread and makes our community stronger. Your family matters here. Your children matter here. That is one thing that will not change.
What to Expect from the Ambassador Program:
Each grade level has 2-3 Grade Level Ambassadors (GLAs) based upon the number of new families entering that grade.
- Your GLA will introduce herself to you early in the summer to help you to prepare for the upcoming school year, for example, navigating the uniform-buying process, the new online Student Store and our new school app so that you can master some of the basics and start the year with confidence.
- Your GLA will invite you to one or more small, casual get-togethers before the start of school and may set up additional small gatherings throughout the year.
- GLAs offer a perpetual support system for the entire school year by keeping in contact and being available. They will be proactive with new information and responsive to your questions.
- The broader Ambassador Team will host one parent-only event in each the first and second trimester for new families across all grade levels.
In addition, you will receive email communications and informational resources designed specifically for new families.
And please don’t hesitate to let your GLA know specifically where you need support. Some families have children who need social support, others may instead need a little help navigating the processes and procedures of the school. Our GLAs are here for you!
Please mark your calendar for the Welcome event August 24th – the first hour will be exclusively for new families and a great opportunity to connect with your GLA, other Ambassadors as the many other new families joining us this fall.
I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to be an Ambassador to you. If you ever have any questions please feel free to reach out to myself or Dana Maas our PTO President.
May God Bless your family now and always.
