After-School Sports Program

The Athletic Program of SJSC is a Christ-centered program that contributes to the development of the individual player in every aspect: spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and social. The coaches strive to enable the student athletes to learn the values of good sportsmanship, as well as responsibility to one’s team, school and self. The Athletic Program is a competitive sports program competing against other schools of the same caliber. Striving to excel is very important in that it teaches the student athlete to be the best person they can be, making them proud of themselves and their accomplishments.

The Athletic Program at St. Junipero Serra Catholic School strives to develop:
  • Confidence, positive self esteem, and moral character
  • The social skills to effectively interact and cooperate with others
  • An understanding of commitment, responsibility, and loyalty
  • An ability to control emotions and display good sportsmanship
  • The skill, ability and knowledge needed to compete successfully

Year-Round Programs

The fall Spirit Squad, open to all St. Serra students in grades 5-8, will cheer for boys' home football games held on the SJSC campus. They will also perform at the fall Spirit Rally. We will have a practice once a week on Thursdays to teach game action cheers and dances to the students. No previous experience is required. We will need 1-2 team parents (per team) to volunteer to coach and supervise the girls at the games. All parents on the team will need to participate in the team snack schedule. More dates will be available once a football game schedule has been determined. The fee for the Spirit Squad program is $185 per child for the season. The fee includes the uniform and shoes which the student will keep.

Please save the following dates for the first few practices this fall. For more information or to volunteer to be a Parent Coach , please contact Coach Gozbak via e-mail at bgozbak@serraschool.org

Track and Field teams practice at least once a week for 8-10 weeks
All Grade One -Eight students are encouraged to come out and register for the SJSC Track and Field Team. This is a very positive program that promotes physical fitness, participation, friendship and sportsmanship among young people.
The program is open to boys and girls and meets at least once a week right after school. During each practice, after the students are led through a warm-up and stretching, they are divided up into age groups and rotated through the different events. The age groups are Grades 1-2, Grades 3-4, Grades 5-6, and Grade 7-8.
The SJSC Track and Field program participates in the PAL (Parochial Athletic League) Meet and St. Mary’s Meet. No prior experience with running competitively is required to participate on the SJSC Track and Field Team.

Our program is designed to introduce kids to sprint and distance running and field events by providing an experience that is fun, competitive, social, and informative about the sport. Depending on the meet, Track & Field events include (or are relatively close to) the following events 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 mile, 4x100m, and 4x400m races and the softball throw, and long jump as field events.

GO, BEARS!

Track & Field Rules
  1. Each student can only enter three events total - not three events and a relay. A student can choose to enter in less than three events.
  2. We can only form relay teams for Serra. If we do not have four runners, we cannot let someone sign up for a relay from another school. The meet organizers do not put relays together.
  3. In grades 1 and 2, relays can be coed if we do not have enough runners of the same gender; that will be allowed. If in our entries, there are plenty of runners of each gender, the meet director reserves the right to reorganize our team.
  4. The meet director realizes that it might be early to form our final relay teams this early before the meet, and they will give us some latitude there. We will need to enter the runners, and then we will be able to reorganize them up until May 8.
  5. The meet will run in two separate shifts. The younger students are running in the morning, and the older ones in the afternoon. (St. Mary’s Classic Only)
  6. No track spikes (or shoes with the spikes removed) are allowed.
  7. An adult from Serra Catholic School will be present at the meet all day. Our runners will have someone that they can report to.
  8. SJSC cannot set up in the infield. All teams and spectators need to stay in the bleachers.
  9. A snack bar will be available, and there are plenty of stores within walking distance of the track-(PAL Meet Only)
  10. If there are any parents that are willing to help during the meet, please have them contact Miss Lewis by calling 888-1990 X164 or e-mail at: jlewis@serraschool.org. There's always a need of parents to help at the finish line, long jump pit and softball throw.
  11. Ribbons are awarded to all participants, and placement ribbons will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each event. The team trophy for high points will be awarded as well.
  12. Coaches will give out more as we get closer to the track meets.
Track Meet Procedures
Heats will be run, and the winning times will be determined from the heat time. There will not be preliminary heats, and then finals. Individual ribbons and a team trophy will be awarded.
  1. Each student may only enter three events total for each meet. This includes relays.
  2. Relays will not be allowed to run with less than four runners from our school.
  3. Co-ed relays are not allowed except in grades 1 and 2.
  4. All events can be organized through April 20th, meaning students have until then to decide which events he/she would like to compete in.
  5. A school representative will pass out t-shirts.
  6. There are no refunds.
  7. Track spikes may not be worn.
  8. A school representative will check in runners upon arrival
Important Information on Practice:
  • Check this webpage or call one of the coaches to confirm any changes due to poor weather conditions or any changes in the practice schedule.
  • Things for student athletes and parent to remember for practices and meets:
    • BE ON-TIME
    • STUDENTS NEED TO MEET AT THE START AND FINISH OF EACH PRACTICE WITH THE GROUP SO THEY CAN STRETCH OUT, WARM UP, AND COOL DOWN
  1. Students need to BE ON-TIME getting to practice (practice time is very limited) and parents will pick up kids on time after practice
  2. Students should bring water/sports drink to every practice and meet
  3. Student’s shoes should be tied in double knots
  4. Students should get adequate sleep and have a light snack and fluids before practice and meets.
  5. Parents should let the coaches know if a child has any allergies or medical conditions that may need attention (allergic to ant bites, bee stings... or has asthma...)
  6. Girls with long hair should wear their hair in a pony tail to keep them cooler and less distracted
Parents/older siblings, can help out at the practices and the meets. They need to communicate with the coaches to see where help is needed!

All your kids have the ability to achieve their individual athletic potential during their performance out on the track or field. They will amaze you with the progress they make over the season by developing an understanding of the concept of “pace” and the mental side of running, which in turn will greatly improve their individual times and increase the distances which they can run. It is exciting to watch them increase their endurance, develop confidence in their abilities, surpass their own expectations, and enjoy the spirit of competition.
