Eighth Grade Curriculum

Curriculum Overview

Instruction in 8th grade is offered using a departmentalized approach. Eigth grade students have a blocked, waterfall schedule that includes eight periods of daily instruction.

  • New Testament: Continued teachings of the New Covenant of Jesus elaboration on the Book of Acts; Gospel Studies - The Book of John Bible Study

  • The Four Pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Creed, Liturgy and Sacraments, Moral Life and Prayer

  • Serra Reads
  • Vocabulary Integrated with Literature
  • Literature including non-fiction, fiction, and poetry
  • Literacy Skills with a focus on reading non-fiction, informational text and practice in study skills and note taking
  • Mechanics of Standard English including grammar, usage and punctuation
  • English Composition featuring the Jane Schaffer Approach to expository writing
  • Additional writing genres of descriptive writing, journals/letters, narrative and persuasive writing and poetry
  • Literacy program that incorporates study skills and test-taking strategies
  • Daily "In the Zone" free reading with reader's response journals
  • Chapman University Holocaust Art and Writing Contest
  • HSPT - High School Placement Test preparation overview and testing strategies
