At times, our lives are forever inspired by the kindness and love of a family member or friend whom God has called home. Often, we want to do something special to honor our loved one but we aren’t exactly sure what to do. In lieu of flowers, some families wish to have donations directed to organizations of their choice. To address this need, a Memorial Program has been created at St. Junipero Serra Catholic School to honor members of our St. Serra community. Memorial gifts can be made to St. Junipero Serra Catholic School to enhance the spiritual, academic, and character growth of our students.
- Tree of Remembrance
- Wall of Remembrance
- Other Memorial Program Options
- Will my gift be tax deductible?
- How do I participate?
The loved one’s family chooses an area in which gifts are to be directed. Areas such as Academic Programs, Fine Arts, Technology, Sports, After School Programs, Youth Ministry, Chapel Furnishings, Tuition Assistance, or Teacher Incentives may be selected. To ensure acknowledgment of your gift, Serra will send a special “In Loving Memory of” card to the loved one’s family, and a thank you card will be sent to, you, the donor. All donor names will be written in St. Serra’s Book of Remembrance. Donors will be recognized in name only. The amount of the gift will not be revealed. Likewise, those donors wishing to remain anonymous will be kept confidential.
Each November a Tree of Remembrance is set up on campus to honor the loved ones of the extended Serra School community who have passed away. The tree is set up at the beginning of November to coincide with All Saints and All Souls Days and remains throughout the entire month. St. Serra families may order ornaments with their loved one’s name inscribed on it. St. Serra students place the ornaments on the Tree of Remembrance. The ornaments will be blessed and special Memorial Masses will be held on St. Serra’s campus with all of the students. Ornaments will be returned to the loved one’s family prior to the Christmas break. This will enable the families to place their ornament on their Christmas tree during the holidays and to be held for safekeeping for future SJSC Tree of Remembrance Ceremonies.
The Wall of Remembrance is reserved for St. Serra students and alumni, parents, faculty and administration, founding families, honored designees and leaders of the church such as the Pope, Diocesan Bishops, and St. Serra’s Parish Pastors.
Names to be added to the Wall of Remembrance would include:
- Current St. Serra Students
- St. Serra Alumni Students who pass in the prime of life (Prior to Age 30)
- Current St. Serra Parents
- Current St. Serra Faculty & Staff (or a member of the founding staff)
- St. Serra Founding Families
- Honored designees (as determined by the SJSC School President)
- Religious Leaders (e.g., Pope, Diocesan Bishops, St. Serra Parish Pastors (current and former))
The name of the loved one will be engraved on the Wall of Remembrance. This will be a wonderful tribute that will last forever. Each November, a special Memorial Mass will be said honoring those whose names are on the wall. In addition, a Virtual Memorial has been added to the school website for those included on the wall. Each loved one will have a Memorial Page. Noted on this page will be the area of choice selected by the family where donations are to be directed and donor recognition listed.
Names that are added to the Book of Remembrance would include:
- All of the categories of the Wall of Remembrance PLUS
- Alumni Families with connections to St. Serra as determined by the SJSC School President
