Our Catholic Identity
St. Junipero Serra Catholic School is a quad-parish, faith formation ministry with our Catholic faith serving as the foundation for all that we do.
The spiritual formation of our students, the instructional team, and parents is our ultimate priority. As a quad-parish school we are blessed to have many parish-based opportunities available to our Serra community including Masses, Reconciliation, and ministries such as Altar-service, Extraordinary Ministering of the Holy Eucharist, prayer groups, bible studies, fellowship events, outreach events, and spiritual retreats. St. Junipero Serra Catholic School’s charism, mission, vision, and philosophy are an integral part of our Roman Catholic faith.
This is a special cross venerated by Saint Francis of Assisi and all the Franciscans. Our school patron is Saint Junipero Serra, the Franciscan priest who had a mission to promote eternal salvation among the Indians of North America and was canonized, September 2015 by Pope Francis for his zealous work for Christ.
The San Damiano Cross, which presently hangs in the Church of Saint Clare in Assisi, Italy is a beautiful and intricate cross. Franciscans place this cross in their chapels and campuses to remind them of their traditions and inspire their faith and commitment to our Lord.
St. Francis was praying before The San Damiano Cross when he received the commission directly from the Lord to rebuild the Church. This cross is called an icon cross because it contains images of people who have a part in the meaning of the cross. the purpose of an icon cross is to teach the meaning of the events depicted and thereby strengthen the faith of the people. You will find a blessed Damiano Cross in every classroom and office on campus.
The Prayer Before the Crucifix at San Damiano
Most High, glorious God,
enlighten the darkness of my heart
and give me true faith,
certain hope and perfect charity,
sense and knowledge, Lord,
that I may carry out
Your holy and true command. AMEN
