SOCIAL STUDIES PROJECT SHEET EXPLORERS
You will prepare a six part project, using
information from the Social Studies text, the
encyclopedia, internet sites, library books (such as biographies), maps and
charts, and any
other source of information you may find. The pages in the Social Studies text
which
cover
this subject are p. 105-143.
You will first choose an explorer from the list
you are given. You will gather
information from the sources listed above, and will bring your information to
class in
order to begin work on this report. There will be six parts, some of which may
be
assigned
as homework during the course of the project.
1. A written report which gives information about the life of your explorer, his discoveries and any other information you feel is important, and which needs to follow the notes you take from the outline developed in class. Each report will be of a different length, depending on how much information is available for your explorer. This will be totally completed in class. (75 points)
2. A cover for the project that gives the explorer's name and shows some interesting aspect of his life. It should have creative lettering and be neatly colored. (25 points)
3. A title page, which gives the name of the explorer you have chosen, your name, and the date on which you turn in your report. This page should be decorated with items which represent your explorer, and it should be neatly colored. (25 points)
4. A Table of Contents - This part of your report will be the last part you do and can only be finished after your entire report is finished. (10 points)
5. A map, hand-drawn, showing where your explorer traveled, showing the number of voyages he made, with the continents, oceans, and important physical features carefully labeled. The map should be carefully colored. (40 points)
6. A drawing, hand-drawn, of boat or ship that is similar to the boat your explorer would have used. Social Studies text p. 112-113, p, 119, p.143, and p.156 show a typical ship of this era. If your explorer did not sail on a boat or ship, but traveled overland, you will draw what his caravan or traveling group would have looked like. Drawings should be neatly labeled and colored. (40 points)
7. A drawing, hand-drawn, of your explorer. If you cannot find a picture of your own explorer, you may use a picture of another explorer from the same country who explored within 100 years of your explorer. (20 points)
8.
A bibliography, listing all of the sources you used in this report. Keep
a list of all the sources you used so you are prepared when it is time to write
this part of your report. You are required to have at least three sources, one
can be your textbook, one can be internet sources, and one can be another book,
such as an encyclopedia. (15 points)
