Rutherford B. Hayes

Rutherford B. Hayes

Rutherford B. Hayes was a great American because of his contributions to the country. He was our 19th President. He helped heal the wounds of the war from 1861 to 1865. He also took the last federal troops out of the South. Hayes continued serving in the war until it was over even though he was wounded several times. Before he became President of the United States, he served his country by being the Governor of Ohio for two terms from 1868 to 1872. Finally, he became president in 1877. He was not a heroic president, but more of a steady, moderate one, which was what the people wanted at the time. During his terms he with drawled the federal troops from Louisiana and South Carolina and named David M. Key of Tennessee, postmaster general. Overall I think President Rutherford B. Hayes was an excellent American because he had many accomplishments that helped our country.
