William McKinley

I think that President William McKinley, the 25th president, was a great president because he addressed issues that changed many people’s lives at the time. When he was a young man, he had to fight in the Civil War. He got a seat in congress when he was 34. During his time in the House of Congress, he became the leading Republican tariff expert, giving his name to the law enacted in 1890. The next year he was elected Governor of Ohio, serving two terms. When he was first elected president, in 1896, the Great Depression was ending. He helped people get out of financial slumps, and get their lives back on track. William also led the Americans through the Spanish war, and helped them capture Spanish fleets. He ran for president a second time in 1900. He won, but shortly after his reelection he was shot twice. He died 8 days later.
