Franklin Pierce

By Jessica Hickey

I believe Franklin Pierce is an important President because he supported the idea of manifest destiny, an idea that Americans believed could not be denied. This “manifest destiny” was an idea that suggested expanding the states of America at the time. Also, President Pierce purchased the land of Arizona and New Mexico that at the time belonged to Mexico. United States President Franklin Pierce supported the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854. After its passage, Missourians, who favored the addition of another slave state to the Union, streamed into Kansas to pack the ballot boxes. Mr. Pierce struggled throughout his life with deaths, alcoholism, and others turning on him but throughout it all he was able to be a great President, who accomplished many things.
