James A. Garfield

By: Matthew Carrigan

My president, James A. Garfield, is important because, during his presidency, he led a brigade against Confederate Troops. He is one of the few presidents who served for only one year. Before he became president, he had to struggle to earn enough money to go get an education. He was the one president who advocated coercing the seceding states back into the Union. One of his quotes that he felt strongly about was “This…will settle the question whether the President is registering clerk of the Senate or the Executive of the United States…shall the principal port of entry…be under the control of the administration or under the local control of a factional senator. He made very difficult choices in his presidency, even though he served for one year.
