Ronald Reagan
By Makenna Bigelow
Ronald Reagan was the 40th president. My president, Ronald Reagan, should be remembered to be the person who sought “peace through strength.” In 1986, Reagan obtained the income tax code that stopped many deductions and allowed millions of people with low incomes. During his terms, he increased the spending for wars 35%. But, he improved the relationship between the U.S.A. and the Soviet Union. Ronald Reagan created a treaty with the Soviet leader-Mikhail Gorbachev-that would stop nuclear missiles. Reagan then declared war in Libya because someone said that Libya was involved in an attack on American soldiers at nightclub in West Berlin. At the Persian Gulf, Reagan maintained the free use of oil during the Iran-Iraq war. He gave support to the anti-Communist insurgencies in Central America, Asia, and Africa, thinking of the Reagan Doctrine (The Reagan Doctrine was a strategy made by the United States to oppose the global influence of the Soviet Union during the final years of the Cold War.) At the end of his term, The United States of America was happy now, since they had the longest record period of the peace time without depression.
