Pope Benedict XVI

· Pope Benedict XVI was born in Marktl Inn on April 16, 1927.

· During World War II he served as a helper in the anti-aircraft unit in the German Military.

· His real name was Joseph Alois Ratzinger.

Early Life

· He and his brother became a priest on October 29, 1951.

· He became a Bishop on May 28, 1997

· He was the Arch bishop of Munich

· He participated in the conclave that elected Pope John Paul II.

 

Religious Life

His Visit to The U.S.

· He arrived at Andrew’s Air Force Base and met the President on April 15, 2008.

· On April 16th it was the Pope’s Birthday and was received by the President and the First Lady in a White House Lawn Ceremony.

· On April 17th the Pope celebrated Mass with 46,000 people at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. 

· On April 18th the Pope arrived in JFK National Airport in New York.  He also attended a Prayer Service with the Christian Leaders of  various denominations.

 

For the Pope’s Birthday I worked at Rancho Santa Margarita Library for four hours.  I also made blankets for the poor.

Papal

· Benedict XVI has only been Pope for three years.

· He became pope on April 19, 2005

· He chose Benedict as his name because of Benedict XV’s ideas on peace.

· He is a conservative and will continue with Pope John Paul II’s views on the role of women in the church, birth control, gay marriages, and homosexuality.
