Art and Architecture

Michelangelo- Born March 6,1474, and died February 18, 1564, Michelangelo was one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance. He did two of the most recognizable, and influential fresco paintings, that include The Last Judgement on the altar wall, and the Scenes from Genesis on the ceiling, both of the Sistine chapel(Rome). He also was a talented sculpter. Two of his most famous works are: Pietà, 1499 and David,1504; both being made of marble. The David is known to be the most recognizable statue in the history of art. Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Tuscany; he lived most of hi life in Florence, but later in his life moved to Rome. I chose Michelangelo because I think he is the best artist/architect of his time(Renaissance). He contributed to the culture of Italy with all his works, that can still be seen today.

Music

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was born in Palestrina, a town near Rome, on March 4, 1525, and died on February 2, 1594 in Rome. He spent most of his career in Rome. His compositions include: 104 masses, 68 offertories, more than 300 motets, at least 72 hymns, 35 magnificats, 11 litanies, 4 or 5 sets of lamentations etc., at least 140 madrigals and 9 organ ricercari.

Literature

Giovanni Boccaccio was born June 16,1313 and died on December 21,1375. He was one of the first writers in early Renaissance. Some of his writings include: On Famous Woman, and the Decameron. His characters he writes about are known to be realistic, spirited, and clever people, also grounded in reality. He was a great writer of this time, that’s why I picked him.

Math and Science

Nicolaus Copernicus was born on February 19, 1473, in Thorn Poland. His birth name was Nikals Kopenik, but he later Latinized it. He was a lawyer, tax collector, a doctor, military governor, judge, vicar-general of canon law and a Polish astronomer. His most famous accomplishment was discovering how the Earth rotates on an axis. He one of the greatest scientists of his time, in my opinion.
