What was the Renaissance?

The renaissance means "rebirth" in French. During this period, new ways of thinking led to a big change. For example, scholars, artists, and scientists made new advances by studying classic Greek and Roman. New inventions were invented to make life easier and trade was reborn between Asia and Italy.

When and where did the Renaissance begin?

The Renaissance period began in Florence, Italy, and then spread all throughout Europe. It started in the 1300s and ended in the 1600s.

Influential People

Some of the most influential people of the time where scholars, scientists, artists, philosophers, and writers because they had news ideas that helped the period grow and develop into a new age by thinking of new theories and creating new inventions.

Art and Architecture

Leonardo da Vinci was a great artist and architect, but he was much more then that. He was a sculptor, an inventor, and an engineer. He painted very famous painting called: The Last Supper and Mona Lisa by using perspective. Some people called him the greatest genius that ever lived. I picked Leonardo da Vinci because he was one of the greatest artists of that time besides what he did in all of the other hobbies he preformed.

Music

Josquin des Prez was a composer of the Renaissance. He lived from 1455 to 1521. He was also the greatest composer of his age and everyone admired his strong skill of technique and expression. Josquin was a master of polyphonic vocal music. Josquin wrote sacred and secular music. I picked Josquin because I feel that he was an important part to the music of the Renaissance.


Literature

Dante Alighieri was a politician and a poet that lived in Italy. He wrote many great works of literature such as The Divine Comedy. He was the first to write in his home town language, which was Italian, instead of Latin. This showed that Italian could be just as good as Latin, which pleased the Italians. I picked Dante Alighieri because he was an excellent writer of that time and started the chain of writes that wrote in there home town language.

Math and Science

Galileo was born in Italy and died in Italy. He was  an Italian Physicist, a mathematician, an astronomer, and a philosopher. Galileo is often called the father of astronomy, modern physics , and science. He improved a telescope, and had a variety of astronomical observations. I decided to pick Galileo because he figured out that the earth revolved around the sun which is what we believe today.

How the Renaissance affects us.

During the Renaissance period many people created new inventions and ideas. For example Johann Gutenberg created the printing press that made books print a lot faster. Many people could now read and write. Also, scholars came up with new mathematical symbols that we still use today, such as the square roots sign, and the signs for positive and negative numbers. William Shakespeare invented more then 2000 words in the English language.
