What was the Renaissance?

The word renaissance means rebirth in French. It was the time when many famous artist, scientist, musicians, and mathematicians started to show up. The Renaissance was a cultural movement.

When and where did the Renaissance begin?

The Renaissance started in the 13th to the 16th century. The place that the Renaissance began was Florence, Italy.

Influential People

Artist, scientist, kings, sculptures, and architects were all influential people because they each did something great during the Renaissance.  Kings were important because they gave money out.

Art and Architecture

Michelangelo was a great artist, which many of his work were for the Roman Catholic Church. He also painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Music

Music in the Renaissance was mostly sacred, not really secular. “Green Sleeves” was a song written by King Henry VII.

Literature

William Shakespeare was born on April 26, 1564, and died on April 23, 1616. He was an English poet and playwright widely regarded as the greatest writer of the English language. He wrote approximately 38 plays and 154 sonnets, as well as a variety of other poems.

Leonardo Da Vinci is famous for his study of humanity and painted the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

How the Renaissance affects us.

By the 15th century intensive study of the Greek as well as Latin classics, ancient art and archaeology, and classical history, had given Renaissance scholars a more sophisticated view of past times.
