Renaissance means rebirth in French. The rebirth of classical things. The Renaissance period was characterized by an intense interest in the classical art and writings of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
When and where did the Renaissance begin?
The renaissance lasted from the 14th century to the 17th century. Renaissance occurred in Italy, England, Germany, Poland, Spain, Netherlands, and France.
The most influential people in the Renaissance were nobles and kings. They had so much influence because the nobles protected the king in exchange for land. They protected peasant’s small parcels of land in exchange for farming. Explorers were also influential because they discovered new lands. For example Christopher Columbus discovered America.
Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 and died in 1519. He was born and raised in a town near Vinci, Italy. His contributions were paintings such as, The Baptism of Christ, The Adoration of the Magi, and The Mona Lisa.
Nicolas Gombert- He was born around 1495 in southern Flanders. Most of the music he composed was in area of sacred music. He brought polyphonic music to its highest point. One of his most popular compositions is his cycle of eight magnificent settings. I picked him because he wrote not only secular but a lot of sacred music which is what we sing at our masses every Sunday.
William Shakespeare- He lived from April 1564 to April 23, 1616 in Warwickshire, England. He was English poet and playwright. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer of the English language. One of his most famous plays is Romeo and Juliet. I picked him because I think that be able to write the number of amazing plays he wrote is a great accomplishment.
Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian polymath. He was greatly known for his fields of anatomy and the study of water. He was a smart man overall. He was involved with math, science, and art/ architecture. Nicolaus Copernicus- He was born February 19, 1473 to May 24, 1543. He was the first European astronomer to formulate the theory of the solar system. He figured out that the sun was at the center of the universe and the other planets revolve around it.
