What was the Renaissance?

The Renaissance was a cultural movement through Italy during the Middle Ages. This period in time marked the rebirth of humanism. The word renaissance means rebirth. During this time artists, and musicians produced many great works of art, freedom, and creativity.

When and where did the Renaissance begin?
The Renaissance occurred in the Middle Ages.
It began in Italy around A.D. 1350 and spread throughout Europe until about 1600A.D. Italian cities such as Naples, Genoa, and Venice became centers of trade between Europe and the Middle East.

Influential People

The most influential people during the Renaissance were bankers, merchants, scholars, explorers, Italian Artists, writers, engineers, architects, scientists, and educators. These people were influential during this time period because they all contributed many things to the people that we still use today. It influenced painting, sculpture, and architecture. Paintings became more realistic and focused less often on religious topics.

Art and Architecture

Leonardo da Vinci was a great Italian artist. He was born in a small town near Florence. He was very artistic at a young age. Leonardo was one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance he painted the Mona Lisa one of the most famous paintings in the world. I chose Leonardo da Vinci because he was a very talented artist and made many great works of art.

Music

 Josquin Desprez was a great artist during the Renaissance. He lived in Italy and died in 1521. He did a lot of music work, he was a singer at the Papal Chapel in Rome. Josquin was a music teacher and belonged to a group of composers known as Netherlands School. I chose Josquin Desprez because he was a great musician, and was religious, he did a lot of church work.

Literature

 Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian writer. In 1513 he wrote a short book called The Prince. In Machiavelli’s writing he argued that ruler had to focus on the here and now not theories, to be successful. I chose Niccolo Machiavelli because wrote in Italian, and was different from the other writers who wrote un Latin.

Math and Science

 Many text books in the 1300’s were about science. Renaissance scholars made there own scientific advances, they also thought mathematics could help them understand the universe. They studied math text and created symbols we still use in math today. The created the symbol for the square root, and for positive and negative numbers.

How the Renaissance affects us.

During the Renaissance time discoveries like mathematic and science affect us today also literature, and music. The Renaissance is important to us today because we wouldn’t have mathematics, science, art, (The Mona Lisa) or any of those important things that the scholars discovered.
