Renaissance means rebirth in French. This period was characterized by scholars, artists, and scientists building on classical Greek and Roman ideas to make new advances in science and the arts. With the invention of the printing press and reopening trade routes between China and Europe, the world experienced economic, intellectual, and cultural growth. Also the emphasis on people as individuals was a new concept.
When and where did the Renaissance begin?
The Renaissance was the period that followed the Middle Ages. It occurred when Europe emerged from the economic stagnation of the Middle Ages and experienced a time of financial growth. It began in Florence, Italy and spread through out Europe during the 1300s through the 1600s. The renaissance occurred in Medieval Europe.
The most influential people in the Renaissance were nobles and kings. They had so much influence because the nobles protected the king in exchange for land. The knights protected peasants' small parcels of land in exchange for farming.
Michelangelo was a famous painter and sculptor during the Renaissance. He was born on March 6, 1475 and died on February 18, 1564. He was born in Caprese, Tuscany. He designed the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. I chose him because he had a variety of talents and wasn’t just good at one thing.
King Henry VIII was born in 1491, in Greenwich, England. His contributions were writing the song called the Greensleeves, which may be the most famous tune written during the Renaissance. He also strengthened the government bureaucracy. I chose King Henry after his father died he continued his works.
Niccolo Machiavelli was an author. He lived from 1469 to 1527 in Florence, Italy. One of his contributions was a book called The Prince. I picked him because he made a great contribution and helped rulers around the world.
Galileo Galilei was born on February 15, 1564 in Pisa, Italy and died on January 8, 1642 in Arcetri, Italy. He was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher. His works are improving the telescope, and creating the microscope. Galileo also attempted to measure the speed of light, though he was not successful. He is considered to be the "father of modern physics," "father of modern astronomy", and the "father of science." I chose him because he was a genius in all science areas.
How the Renaissance affects us
One event that affected us was the Fall of Constantinople. A discovery was the scientific method, which was a process for discovery that was a new way of learning about the world. One decision was that people decided to study the humanisms. The Renaissance is important to us today because many famous works of art and sculpture occurred during that time period. There were many changes in schooling and education that made a difference in daily life. It made a difference in history and there were many advances that we couldn’t do without.
