What was the Renaissance?

Renaissance means “rebirth” in French and refers to the period following Europe’s Middle Ages.

This period was characterized by scholars, artists, and scientists building on classical Greek and Roman ideas to make new advances in science and the arts.  With the invention of the printing press and reopening trade routes between China and Europe, the world experienced economic, intellectual, and cultural growth.  Also the emphasis on people as individuals was a new concept.

Influential People

The most influential people during the Renaissance were the scholars.  When they fled  to Italy they brought ancient Greek and Roman texts there.  People seeing these texts became interested in history and sparked interest in the arts.  They taught the people about humanism, too.

How the Renaissance affects us. An event that affected us was the fall of Constantinople.  A discovery was the scientific method, a process for discovery that was a new way of learning about the world. A decision was that people decided to teach and learn the humanisms.  The Renaissance is important to us today because many works of art and literature that are famous today occurred in that period.  There were many changes in daily life like schooling and education.
