What was the Renaissance?

 

The word Renaissance means "rebirth" in French. This period was characterized by the Greek and Roman studies. During the Renaissance, people tried to re-discover the studies. That is why the Renaissance means the "rebirth" of the Greek and Roman studies.

When and where did the Renaissance begin?

The Renaissance started in the 1300's, but sadly it started to decline and ended in the 1600's. The Renaissance occurred in Europe.

Influential People

The people who were most influential during the Renaissance were Italian Scholars because, they wanted to revive what the Greeks and Romans studied. Also hey read ancient texts and re-found the glories of Greece and Rome.
Artist studied ancient statues that were display in Italy. They tried to make their work look like the work of the Greeks and Romans.

Some writers wrote advice on how rulers should rule. For example, They thought sometimes rulers had to be ruthless to keep in order. As a result, they serve as a good pupil of the Renaissance, by having interest in human behavior and society.

Art and Architecture

Leonardo da Vinci was a magnificent artist because he painted the world known Mona Lisa and the Last Supper,. He also was a sculptor, inventor, artist, and engineer. During his life, he lived in Italy. He lived from 1452-1519. I chose Leonardo because it was said that Leonardo was one of the greatest painters of the Renaissance period.

Music

Monteverdi was a great musicians because he wrote many madrigals and he was appointed at St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. He lived in Italy and he lived from 1567 to 1643. One of his works was called L'incoronazione di Poppea. I have chosen Monteverdi because he was one of the first great opera writers.

Literature

Queen Elizabeth I lived in England and France. She lived from 1533 to 1603. Her contributions were “Written with a Diamond on her Window at Woodstock”, “Written on a Wall at Woodstock”, “Written in her French Psalter”, and “In Defiance of Fortune”. I chose Queen Elizabeth I because she has achieved so much during her life time. She was Queen of England and France, and wrote many poems, speeches, and prayers.

Math and Science

Galileo lived in Italy and lived from 1564 to 1642. He made a series of sunspot observations and he invented the microscope. He made his first telescope in 1609 and he discovered the four satellites of Jupiter, observed a supernova, and verified the phases of Venus. I chose Galileo because he made a major step during the Renaissance by figuring out how much farther you can see the universe with his microscope.

How the Renaissance affects us.

Johann Gutenburg discovered the printing press that used the movable type. This makes writing much faster. Today we use a computer or typewriter, but still, the printing press made us one step closer to getting where we are now. Galileo discovered the microscope, which we still use today. We also do some operas around the globe. The Mona Lisa is famous world-wide, and it is almost in all well-known museums.
