President Rutherford B. Hayes

President Hayes was the 19th president. He was born in 1822 in Ohio. He was educated at Kenyon College and Harvard Law school. He fought in the Civil War where he was wounded in action and moved up rank to major general. Hayes entered Congress in 1865 Between 1867 1876 he served three terms as governor of Ohio. He ran for president against Governor Samuel J. Tilden of New York . He pledged the safety of the Negroes in the south. He was famous for being opsessed with finishing his home in Spiegel Grove in Fremont, Ohio.
