Martin Van Buren
By: Emilee Brown
Martin Van Buren was the eighth president of the United States of America. He was elected president in 1836, and served one term only. During his lifetime, he went from being a principal northern leader for Andrew Jackson to earning a term in presidency. While he was president, he signed the Specie Circular, stating that all lands must be bought with hard coins, such as gold and silver. Also, he blocked the Annexation of Texas. Then in 1837, the United States faced the worst depression of their time, the Panic of 1837. In this panic, banks and businesses went bankrupt and many were left without a home. He was not reelected to be president in 1840, and he died in 1862. His presidency should be remembered for his contribution to the United States government and how he helped solve the Panic of 1837.
