James K. Polk
By:Karsyn Kraft
James K. Polk, the eleventh president of the United States, was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, in 1795. Early in his life Polk received a degree in law. Soon after, at the age of twenty seven, he entered the Tennessee Legislature. Two years later, Polk was elected to the United states Congress, soon becoming the speaker of the House. While trying to get elected president, James K. Polk declared that he was for the "Manifest Destiny." Polk also declared that he was for expansion. When fellow republicans asked the democrats "Who really is James K. Polk?" the democrats would respond by saying "The man who stands for expansion." Today, this is what James K. Polk is known for. Polk left the office with bad health because of such hard work in office, and died in June 1849.
