Millard Fillmore

Millard Fillmore, the thirty-third president, was born in 1800. He was alive when the Louisiana Purchase took place, even if he was only three when it began. He inherited an office at a time when the nation began breaking up over the issue of slavery. He was also involved with the anti-slavery acts, especially the Compromise of 1850. He admitted California as well as settling the Texan border. His presidency will be remembered for his representation of the more traditional, or Whig, political party as well as his slave opposition.
