Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant was a dedicated father and a brave warrior through out his lifetime always trying to help others and do the right thing. After graduating from U.S. Military Academy on July 1, 1843, Grant joined the army and later on in 1862, Grant won the first large Union victory against the Confederacy at Fort Donelson. His soldiers later said that Grant was a dedicated soldier who would give them “the very clothes on his back” to make sure that no soldier in his troop suffered from the cold. Grant was very devoted to his men which really inspires one to act non-selfishly and to help others. I think that it is important to be selfless and care about other people. In 1865, after many scuffles near Richmond, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Lee was a very powerful general who led his army to multiple wins and was astounded when Grant conquered his army. Grant was very hard working and eager to help his country. This improved his odds of becoming president because most people like someone who can protect them and take charge when they are needed. Grant was nominated, in 1868, as the Republican candidate for president and won 214 votes out of the 294 votes that were cast and was later re-elected in 1872. After Grant’s death, he was reburied in 1897 and nearly one million people attended the dedication service. These statistics show that Grant must have been doing something right in leading his country because there were many people who deeply admired him. Grant was known for his decisive actions which probably helped during his term. Many people believed in him and his actions which united the nation in a time of much hatred. Ulysses S. Grant was a very hard working man who deserves the entire acknowledgement that I am saying especially when he suffered as much as he did throughout his wonderful life.
