President Herbert Hoover

Herbert Hoover

Herbert Clark Hoover, elected in 1928, was an intelligent president who did everything he could to pull America out of the Great Depression. After World War I, Herbert became a member of the Supreme economic Council and head of the American Relief Program, to help support starving people overseas in Europe. He said, “Twenty million people are starving. Whatever their politics, they shall be fed!” He was a considerate man for thinking of others who were in desperate need. During his presidency, the banks closed, businesses went bankrupt, and many people lost their savings, homes, and farms. Hoover went through one of the toughest times in American history and did everything he could to try to put it to an end. Herbert believed that the most effective way to undo the Depression was to help businesses recover so that they could provide jobs for the unemployed. Even though Herbert tried everything to end the Depression, everything proved unsuccessful. He was blamed for a “reckless and extravagant” spending of money. It also turned out that in the re-election in 1932, he was defeated by Roosevelt. Even though he went through tough struggles and people did not always agree with him, he managed to try his best to bring America out of its dark times.
