The M&M Report

Problem:

Does every 1.69oz bag of plain M&M candies have the same amount of each color?

Materials:

·         Four 1.69oz bags of M&M milk chocolate candies

·         Computer

Procedure:

·         Open the bag

·         Pour out the bag

  • Sort the M&Ms into piles by color
  • Count the M&Ms
  • Recount the M&Ms
  • Write the number of different color M&Ms on the board
  • Type the number of different color M&Ms in the chart

Observations:

I noticed that most of the M&Ms had the didn’t have the same number of a certain color in a different bag.  In bag 1 and 3 there was the same number of blue M&Ms.  In bag 2 and 3 there was the same number of red and orange M&Ms, but all the other numbers were different.

Analysis and Conclusion

I learned that not every bag of 1.69oz plain M&M candies have the same amount of each color.  I came to this conclusion because the data shows that there is a different amount of candy sorted by color in each bag.  I believe M&Ms are sorted in a factory, then placed in bags. They are not sorted by color to make sure that there is the same amount of each color.

Math Fun with M&Ms

Using Excel we found the mean for each color, the found the median and  mode.  We went to the M&M web site and found a chart that states what percent of each color is in a bag of M&Ms.  We again used Excel to calculate the percents in our bags and then found the mean, median and mode for the percents.
