Multicellular
Heterotroph
Warm blooded
ingest food and digest it in an internal cavity
bodies of most animals (all except sponges) are made up of cells organized into tissues
The development of most animals is characterized by distinctive stages which are:
zygote
blastula
gastrula
bilateral symmetry
segmented body, including segmented muscles
three germ layers and a well-developed coelom
single, dorsal, hollow nerve cord, usually with an enlarged anterior end (brain)
tail projecting beyond (posterior to) the anus at some stage of development
pharyngeal pouches present at some stage of development
ventral heart, with dorsal and ventral blood vessels and a closed blood system
complete digestive system
bony or cartilaginous endoskeleton usually present
They have 3 middle ear bones they are called:
Malleus
Incus
and Stapes
They have a lot of hair
Most mammals have teeth
Mammals feed their newborn young with milk, a substance rich in fats and protein that is produced by modified sweat glands called mammary glands.
Primates are usually recognized based on a suite of primitive characteristics of the skull, teeth, and limbs
The largest is the gorilla, weighing up to around 175 kg
They have furry noses and a plate separating orbit from temporal fossa, and they lack a toothcomb
Most primate species live in the tropics or subtropics, although a few, most notably humans, also inhabit temperate regions
Eat leaves or fruit
This family includes guenons, mangabeys, macaques and baboons
These monkeys have powerful jaws
Their diet may also include: seeds, flowers, buds, leaves, bark, gum, roots, bulbs, crabs, fish, lizards and insects
They have the dental formula 2/2, 1/1, 2/2, 3/3 = 32
Their hind limbs and forelimbs are roughly the same length
Genus and Species: Pygathrix roxellana
Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey.
The golden monkey lives in the mountainous regions of southwestern China, along the Tibetan Plateau
Golden monkeys are social animals that display a group behavior known as fission and fusion
Found in temperate broad leaf forests at elevations ranging from 5,000 to 11,000 feet above sea level
Live in mountain forests all year long, but they may migrate to slightly lower elevations during the winter
The Golden Monkey is a very social animal
Their diets vary according to the different seasons
During warm weather they eat leaves and pine needles
They eat buds, bark, and fruit seeds for good nutrition
In the winter they eat bark and lichen
The Golden Monkey is hunted by humans for their fur and meat
Their fur is sold for medical preparations and its meat is sold for food
