Civil War Timeline

1852- Uncle Tom’s Cabin- When Harriet Beecher Stowe published this book, it fueled the flames of anti-slavery feelings among the people of the U.S.

 

1854- Kansas-Nebraska Act- This act established new territories.  It opened up new territories to settle.  This caused the North and South delegates to fight over the land.

 

1857- The Dred Scott v. Sanford decision- From this decision, the Supreme Court stated that congress cannot ban slavery from the states and that slaves are not citizens.  Yet again, this fueled the anti-slavery flames among the U.S.

 

1859- John Brown raids Harper’s Ferry- This act demonstrated that there were people who cared for the blacks.  John Brown and many others demonstrated this when they tried to free some salves that were on the Harper’s Ferry.

Abraham Lincoln

1860- Abraham Lincoln is elected president- This really poured liter fluid on the anti-slavery movement.  Lincoln believed that there should be no slavery.

 

1861- The C.S.A. is established- After numerous states seceded from the U.S., they decided to become a “new” nation.  America was officially torn in two.

 

1861- Fort Sumter is attacked- The Confederate army decided to attack the fort, big mistake.  This is the start of the Civil War.

 

1863- Emancipation proclamation- The proclamation stated that the slaves in the Confederate states were to be freed.

 

1863- Battle of Gettysburg- This is one of the most notorious battles ever fought during the Civil War.  This battle was a major win for the Union.

 

1863- Gettysburg Address- President Lincoln gave a two-minute address and dedicated a cemetery to all those who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg.

 

1863- Union Wins!- Robert E. Lee surrenders to the Union at Appomattox Courthouse, Va.  Thos officially ends the war and slavery. Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee                       

 

 

 

 

 

1865- Lincoln assassinated- After the Civil War, which the Union won, John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Lincoln.  He was mad that there was no more slavery in the states and he was angry about how Lincoln was running

the states.

 

1865- 13th amendment is ratified- The 13th amendment states that there is to be no slavery in the states.

 

1868- 14th amendment is ratified- The 14th amendment states the definition of citizenship.  It states who can or cannot be a citizenship.

 

1870- 15th amendment is ratified- The 15th amendment states that all blacks are given the right to vote.
