A map is a picture of a place. Different maps show different information. One map can't show everything.

A Relief Map will help you can find cities and towns. It also shows the shape of land: mountains, valleys, rivers and lakes. Shaded relief maps can show how a particular area looks when the sunlight shines on it.

A Road Map shows how people can travel from one place two another. It shows physical features like mountains and rivers and it also shows political features like cities and towns. It can show you which are the main highways and which are small county roads.

A topographic map shows a small area and nearby physical features. These kinds of maps use contor lines to show elevation. These lines join points of equal elevation above a specified reference, like sea level. You can  locate your school, church, railroads and other things on this type of map. hikers usually don't use this kind of map when they are hiking. Builders use this kind of map to figure out where they can build roads and building.
