Oxbow Lake

Montana S.

An Oxbow Lake is a lake resulting from former river bend: a small curved lake developed on a river flood by a river abandoning its original meandering course and cutting a new channel. An Oxbow Lake can be created by any lake.  Once a river wants to find the quickest way to go, it cuts off half of the lake and the half that is cut off has no where to go, then it is now called an Oxbow Lake.

One Oxbow Lake can be found all over the world.  This is an example of an Oxbow Lake in Cass County, North Dakota.
