The word clastic comes from a Greek word meaning "broken". Clastic rock is a basic sedimentary rock, formed by sediment. Sediment is rock and mineral fragments formed in a process when they are disintegrated on the Earth's surface. Some examples of common sediment are silt, sand, mud, and gravel. Sediment is transported from it's place of origin by wind, ice, streams, ocean currents, and/or rain. Clastic rock is classified on the basis of the rock's texture, and the rock's composition. For example sandstone is classified as clastic rock.
