Calculating The Surface Area Of An Oil Spill (.4 mL)
Using the digital image captured with our digital microscope,
and an Excel spread sheet, we calculated what the surface
area damage could be if 362 gallons of oil were to spill into the ocean.
.4 mL of oil in a bowl of water.
Volume of the Oil Spill .4mL 1000mL 1 gallon 1million gallons 362 million gallons

Diameter of oil spill (cm) 1.50 3750 14212.5 14212500000 5144925000000
Radius of oil spill (cm) 0.75
Raduis squared (cm^2) 0.56
Surface area of spill (cm^2) 1.77 4415.625 16713.1 16713140625 63259237266
From my calculations a 362 million gallon oil spill will cover an area of 63,259,237,266 sqare cm.
