Egypt's flood cycle

In Egypt the year was divided into three seasons.  The three seasons were the flood season, the planting season, and the harvest.

After the flood season the water left a layer of fertile black silt.  This silt was needed to farm.  The floods were predictable unlike in Mesopotamia.  The flood season lasted for four months.  These four months were June, July, August, and September.

Farmers depended on the annual flooding to water their crops.  The farmers took advantage of the floods by building irrigation canals to bring water to their fields.  The farmers also built dams to hold water during droughts.
