TRADE IN EGYPT

In ancient Egypt, most of the people were farmers.  The farmers used land that was owned by the king.  In return, the farmers would pay the king with crops they grew, or cattle, sheep and goats they raised.  This was their way to trade.

There were also many tradesmen in the towns.  Some of the jobs were brick makers, stone carvers, masons and artists.  These people built the great pyramids.  The tradesman traded housing and food for their labor.

People who could read or write worked as scribes to keep records for the king, or kept official records, or even decorated tombs  and temples with hieroglyphs.  Also, these people traded their skills for food, clothing and a place to live.
