Joseph

Genesis Chapters 37, 39-41

Joseph was born in Canaan.  He was the first born of his mother Rachael, and the 11th son of his father Jacob.  Joseph was loved best by Jacob of all of his 11 brothers.  Jacob gave Joseph a long, white tunic, which made his brothers jealous of him.

God gave Joseph the gift to interpret dreams.  Joseph had two dreams and told them to his brothers.  Joseph told them the first dream.  "We were binding sheaves in the field.  My sheave stood upright, and all of your sheaves bowed down to mine.  This means that one day, all of you will bow down to me.  Then Joseph told his brothers his second dream. "The moon and eleven stars bowed down to the sun.  This means that you and our father will bow down to me."

Joseph's ten older brothers were out tending flocks in the field.  Jacob sent Joseph out to see how they were doing.  Joseph's brothers captured him and sold him to some Ishmaelites and he was taken to Egypt to be sold.  His brothers took his tunic, dipped it in some blood, and told their father that he was attacked.

Joseph became a strong and articulate slave to Potiphar.  Potiphar's wife accused Joseph of sleeping with her, and Potiphar threw him in jail.  While he was in jail, he interpreted two of pharaoh's former servants slave's dreams.  One was to be put back into his job and one was to die.  Both of these happened.

Pharaoh had a dream that no one could interpret.  Joseph was brought out of jail and into the royal court.  Joseph was able to interpret the dream.  He said, "You will have seven years of harvest, and seven years of famine.  You should save food from the seven years of plenty for the seven years of famine."  Pharaoh released Joseph from jail and made him second in command in all of Egypt.
