About the
List...
-
The Quiz List
is available at the
Rancho Santa Margarita Public Library, the Mission Viejo Public Library, and at Border's Books in RSM. The
lists will soon be updated with the additions just made.
-
The quiz list
remains in ONE list, with
five display options;
we've now added a list sorted by Author's Last Name. The file
will automatically open to display the list sorted by TITLE. To see any
of the other sort options (by Lexile, by Reading Level, Author's Last
Name or by Date
Added), click on the tab at the bottom of the page; it's all in one file! (See
below)
-
Quiz titles will be added several
times a year based on requests made to teachers. Students are
encouraged to write down specific quiz titles they want and give them to
homeroom teachers (grades 2, 3, 4 and 5) or one of the Middle School
Literature teachers. (Please don't request "Magic School Bus titles",
rather write down the specific Magic School Bus quiz you'd like.)
We are no longer
purchasing the monthly book club collections.
About the Program...
In its effort to instill a life-long love of reading required for
academic success, the literature curriculum in grades 2 through 8(*) includes an independent reading program. Students select from
hundreds of book titles, read the book and then take a computerized
multiple-choice test to verify comprehension. Results are reported
immediately to the student, accumulated and then stored on the student's
reading record.
- Students
are required to score a minimum number of points each trimester. The minimum point
requirement varies by grade and, in some grades, by trimester. See the literature teacher
for details.
-
Students
may take tests on books based on their Lexile Reader Measure.
- Tests
are pass-fail. Ten questions are asked, and a number of
correct answers are
required to pass (varies by grade level). There is no partial credit given for answering fewer than
the designated number of correct
questions correctly.
-
Only
one test may be taken per day (unless otherwise directed by teacher).
- If a
test is failed, the test may be taken again, at the discretion of the teacher.
-
To allow teachers
time to incorporate results into trimester grade, no tests may be taken during the last
week of any trimester
or taken after Memorial Day.
The Point is not
Points
The
purpose of this program is to help instill a life-long love of reading. It is about
encouraging every child to read at his or her grade level and, in doing so, to become an
enthusiastic reader. It is not a contest to accumulate points, nor is it
a program to be circumvented by testing on previously-read books, by seeing movie
versions, any means other than reading a book. It is often better to read three
eight-point books and ace each test than to read one 24-point book and fail the test.
The availability of this list increases the opportunity for parents to be
involved with their child's reading choices. Be realistic when choosing a selection.
Suggestions for books appropriate to any students reading level are always available
from the teacher.
Take
this opportunity to turn an ongoing educational requirement into a
never-ending
adventure that will last your lifetime!
Scholastic
Reading Inventory Assessment
Shortly after returning to school in September, second through eighth grade students take a 20-30 minute evaluation of their reading skills using Scholastic Reading Inventory. This
electronic test will return a Lexile Reader Measure
for each student that indicates a level of reading comprehension. Using the Lexile Reader
Measure, each student's comprehension level can be matched with the school's Reading
Counts quiz library to provide a list of books that will challenge each student at an
appropriate reading level, regardless of grade level. By reading at his or her
comprehension level, each child will be able to experience reading success rather than
frustration, become a more confident reader and develop a love of reading that will carry
throughout the school career and beyond.
The Lexile
Text Measure (the number assigned through Scholastic to its Reading Counts
quizzes) is the level given to a book based on its difficulty of text (vocabulary,
sentence length and structure).
The Lexile
Reader Measure is given to a student based upon his or her level of reading
comprehension.
The
List of Quizzes
The quiz collection now numbers
over 4,400 book titles for all grades. One
list - with four different sorts - allows you to search for a book by
Title, Grade Level, Author's Last Name, Lexile Score, and the Date Added. You can
search through any list (regardless of how it is sorted) to find a
particular word in a title or to find books by one author.
-
Using any list, just click on <Edit> at the top of the browser and then <Find> on
this page, and type in the author's last name. Use the <Find Next>
button to continue to search for more titles until "Microsoft Internet
Explorer (Finishes) Searching The Document".
-
If you want a
book with "Baseball" in the title, you can search through the entire
catalog (as detailed above) to quickly find not only "Baseball Fever" but also "All About
Baseball", "Babe Ruth: One of Baseball's Greatest", and other quizzes on
books about the sport you mightn't have known were available.
The list will be
updated as quizzes are added. If you need copies of any of the lists please print them out
at home, not at school; each list is now over 70 pages!. A link to Reading Counts!
information is prominent on the home page and includes the date the list was updated.
