Pre-Civil War

1820- Missouri compromise – it wanted to keep in order in the US.

1850- Fugitive Slave Act- created slave territories.

1852- Uncle Toms Cabin published this book was about a slave and shows the horror of slavery.

1854- Texas becomes a State we won Texas to Mexico.

1859- John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry.

During Civil War

1860- Abraham Lincoln becomes president; He was an important president because he wanted to end slavery.

1861- Missippsi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana secede or withdraw from the nation.

1861- The Civil War begins in Fort Sumter because of slavery.

1863- Homestead Act- allowing settlers to claim land.

1867- U.S. acquires Alaska from Russia.

1863- Battle of Gettysburg this battle was important because most of the battles of the

Civil War and were President Lincoln said the Gettysburg address.

1865- The Civil War ends in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania after many are killed President Lincoln

1870- Fithteenth amendment added to Constitution

1871- Chicago fire kills 300 and leaves 90,000 homeless

1886- Statue of Liberty is given by French because the statue was intended as a monument to the freedom found lacking in France.
