Civil War Timeline

 

Pre-Civil War

 

*      1854- Kansas-Nebraska act repealed the Missouri compromise and renews tension.

*      1857- Dred Scott versus Stanford upsets north because they did not free Dred Scott.

*      1859- John Brown and 21 others capture Harper’s Ferry in an attempt to spark a slave revolt.

*      1860- Abe Lincoln is elected president and South Carolina adds to the Confederates.

*      1861- Confederacy is established and many Southern states secede from the union to add to the Confederates.

 

During Civil War

 

*      1861- The confederates attack Ft. Sumter marking the start of the Civil War.

*      1861- Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee secede from the union strengthening confederate forces.

*      1863- The emancipation proclamation is delivered giving free southern slaves jobs in the Union strengthening their forces.

*      1863- The battle of Gettysburg is fought encouraging Lincoln to take action of some sort.

*      1863- Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg address dedicating the battle field to be a national burial ground for those who had died in battle.

*      1864- General William T. Sherman captures Virginia adding space to the Union.

*      1865- General Ulysses S. Grant captures the confederate capital and turns the tide toward Union Success.

*      1865- Robert E. Lee surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia leading to a sure end to the war

*      1865- President Abraham Lincoln is assassinated, infuriating the Union, and the vice president Andrew Johnson takes over the presidency

*      1865- The thirteen amendment is ratified prohibiting all slavery and finishing the war.
