forces Dred Scott to remain a slave by the U.S. supreme court, even though he was taken into a
free territory by his master for 2 years.

Ulysses S. Grant is inaugurated as the 18th president of the U.S.

1870- 15th
Amendment to the constitution is ratified; it allows blacks the right to
vote.

1865-
General Ulysses S. Grant captures Richmond, VA, the capital of the confederacy.

1863-
President Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address.

1863-
The Battle of Gettysburg takes place; this is the turning point in the war.

The Civil War begins at the Battle of Fort Sumter in Charleston, South
Carolina.

Save Act is passed, persecuting northerners that helped to hide runaway
slaves.

The Emancipation Proclamation is issued, freeing slaves in the confederate
states.

The Homestead Act is passed, allowing settlers to claim land after they
have lived on it for 5 years.

1865- Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in Washington, DC, and Andrew Jackson takes over.

1867- U.S. acquires Alaska from Russia for 7.2 million.
