Johnny’s Pain
Often you hear the expression no pain no gain. Is this true? In Johnny tremain, Johnny’s burning of his hand altars his life by helping him become more self confident, and independent. The pain Johnny endures builds his self confidence, and independence.
Johnny badly burns his hand, which melts the skin due to a cracked crucible. “The burn was so terrible at first he felt no pain, but stood staring stupidly at his hand.”(p.33) when his hand was burned he was upset, and said. Dove was not right to injure Johnny in such a way because he was jealous. The severity of his burn affects his ability to work.
After Johnny’s accident, Johnny had to find a new job because he was useless to the laphams. “A large part of every day Johnny spent doing what he called ‘looking for work’.”(p.43) it was hard for Johnny to find work with a deformed hand. Johnny was very depressed, and in one day Johnny became part of the lower class. Once Johnny’s hand became deformed he had to find a new job in society.
The pain Johnny endured altered his life forever by giving him a different personality, and rank in society. Johnny learns that no pain no gain, he endured a lot of pain. This made his life better. He also learned tat people die, like Rab, but life moves on.
