“Metamorphosis of a Man”

Johnny is like a butterfly, he transforms into a better person to start a new life of flying.  In Johnny Tremain, Johnny, a presumptuous young apprentice transforms his arrogant personality into one that is more appreciative and humble.  Johnny’s adept skills get to his head causing his pompous ways to really show.

As the elite apprentice of the house, Johnny has many disdainful actions and attitudes towards others.  Due to Johnny’s predominate skills in silversmith, “Johnny was the boss of the attic, and almost the house.”(p. 2)  Johnny’s handy work in silversmith decides his position and jurisdiction in the Lampham house.  Because of Johnny’s indispensable work and authoritative power in the Lampham family, he can not help but take smugness in his work.  Johnny’s dexterous skills as apprentice create him to be egotistic and boorish.

The fatal accident of Johnny’s hand, results in the positive transformation of his psychological side.  While in the presence of others, “he always kept his right hand thrust into his pocket.”(p.59)  Johnny feels abashed by his hand and believes others are discriminating him because of it.  Johnny’s injury withdraws him from others by making him feel out of place.  Johnny’s mental transformation effects both his actions and thoughts in ways both good and bad.

The accident that causes the beginning of Johnny’s new life occurs for the better.  Like the transformation of a butterfly, Johnny begins as a caterpillar, in a life of disrespect and discrimination, and transforms to a butterfly, in a life of flying and beauty.  His wings, vibrant and exquisite, show his new personality of humbleness.  As a butterfly others esteem him and see his beauty.
