Civil War Timeline

1852 – Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a book that was against slavery and showed the cruel penalties to slaves

1854 – Kansas-Nebraska Act, Kansas a slave state and Nebraska a free state.  Also proposed popular sovereignty. 

1854 – Popular Sovereignty.  This was proposed under the Kansas-Nebraska Act by Stephen A. Douglas.  Let voters vote on territories to be free or

            slave state.      

1857 – Dred Scott Case.  Antislavery people were outraged by the decision of the Supreme Court.  They insisted that blacks have no right to sue and

            cannot even be considered citizens of the U.S.

1859 – John Browns raid at Harpers Ferry.  John Brown and his sons raided proslavery settlers along the Pottawatomie River.

1860 – South Carolina Seceded.

1861 – Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee seceded because they were

            angry at the presidential election.   

1861 – Attack on Fort Sumter.  Confederates attack Fort Sumter in Charleston, S.C. making the start of the war.

1863 – Emancipation Proclamation.  It freed the slaves in the confederate states.

1863 – Homestead Act.  Allowed settlers to claim land (160 acres) after they have lived on it for five years.

1863 – Gettysburg address delivered by Lincoln.  The battle field was dedicated as a national cemetery by President Lincoln.

1865 – Lincoln is assassinated  by John Wilkes Booth in Washington, DC, and is succeeded by his vice president, Andrew Johnson.

1866 – Tennessee was readmitted.

1868 – South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, and North Carolina readmitted.

1870 – 15th amendment is ratified.
