Text Box: 1854~Kansas-Nebraska Act
The land in Kansas and Nebraska was fertile and farmers were moving onto the land, but the Missouri Compromise of 1820 was a big problem.  It said that the two territories were slave free, and the farmers needed slaves to do the farming, so the Kansa-Nebraska Act separated two territories making one slave and one remaining slave free, as the result of popular sovereignty. 
Text Box: 1852~Uncle Tom’s Cabin
This pamphlet was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852.  This document stated the horrid parts of slavery, changing the United States.  This showed many people that slavery is not the answer to quicker farming.

 

 

 


Text Box: 1857~Dred Scott Case
The Dred Scott vs. Stanford case was over a slave whose owner died.  This slave went to court to try to earn his freedom.  This infuriated the Republicans because this made the slave’s whose owners died remain a slave forever.
Text Box: 1856~John Brown’s Raid on Lawrence
Seven hundred men from Kansas and Missouri attacked Lawrence.  They looted and destroyed buildings, and started guerrilla warfare in Kansas.

This was a three way race over the issue of slavery in territories.  Buchanan won the election with 45% of the votes.  This insured popular sovereignty in the states.

 

 

Text Box: 1868~Central Pacific Union Railroads are created 
This creates the first transcontinental railroad, which connects the East to the West.  This is a huge step, making it easier to travel across country. 
Text Box: 1865~The Thirteenth Amendment
 The thirteenth amendment is admitted to the constitution ruling out slavery in the United States.  This changes the Southern economy which was based on plantations with slaves.

This is the turning point of the Civil War.  This was a series of battles fought during the war in which the United States won.

This freed slaves in the United States, changing the way of life for the southerners.
