“A Hard-Going Young Man”

 

“If a man does his best what else is there?” (General George S. Patton) In Johnny Tremain, due to the lack of employment during the revolutionary War, Johnny faces the challenging obstacle of finding a job, resulting in a loss of self-esteem.  Johnny faces difficulties due to his injured hand, but tries his best to overcome it.

          Johnny loses self-assurance and becomes timid, due to his injured hand. For example, “he barged into shop after shop keeping his hand hidden in his pocket.”(p.43) Johnny is embarrassed to show his injured hand. Johnny loses confidence in his abilities to do work.  Johnny becomes shy and loses his self-respect.

          Johnny’s hand restricts the work he can do, therefore he has trouble finding a job. Merchants refused to hire Johnny due to his injured hand. Johnny’s hand makes him unmarketable. Johnny feels sorry for himself due to the fact that his hand has a deformity. Johnny has difficulty finding a job

          Johnny loses self-esteem due to the intricacy of finding a job. After searching for employment, and being denied by many merchants, he finally gets a chance to apply his talent. Johnny never gives up in his journey to find a job. He always tries his best but does not always win.
