Before the Civil War

1852-Uncle Toms Cabin is published it sends a message for the people about the harshness of slavery.

1854-Congress passes the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

1857-James Buchanan is elected as a Democrat but Republicans show their power in the election.

1859-John Brown a guerrilla and some men are killed.

1860-Abraham Lincoln is an antislavery Republican and is elected President.

1861-Civil War begins.

During the Civil War

1861- Jefferson Davis is elected President of the Confederacy and is their first president.

1862- Emancipation Proclamation frees the slaves.

1863- Battle of Gettysburg kills many people on both sides of the war

1863- Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg address and is now known as one of the nation’s greatest speeches.

1863- Homestead Act becomes law, allowing Southern white settlers to claim land.

1865- Lincoln is assassinated because he is antislavery.

1865- Confederacy surrenders and that ends the war.

1865- 13th Amendment passed and prohibits slavery.
