“A Time For Change”
“There are no mistakes, only coincidences. All events are blessings to learn from.” (Elizabeth Kubler- Ross) In Johnny Tremain, Johnny, a presumptuous young apprentice, maims his hand, which maims his hand, which causes him to transform his haughty personality to one that is more appreciative and humble. Johnny makes many mistakes that cause people to think of him as conceited.
Johnny’s pride causes others to make fun of him. Cilla says, “When the meek inherit the earth, I doubt Johnny will get as much a s a divot of sod.” (p. 10) Cilla thinks that Johnny believes himself to be better than those around him. Johnny being unaware that he comes off as a self- absorbed, stuck up person , friends have to bring it to his attention. Johnny’s behavior results in people having little respect for him.
Johnny eventually realizes his faults and strives to improve himself. “Johnny began to watch himself. For the first time he learned to think before he spoke.” (p. 108) Johnny is trying really hard to be unpretentious and less temperamental for the first time in his life. He becomes aware of his haughtiness and decides that change is necessary. Other peoples’ opinions cause Johnny to alter his personality.
Johnny’s injury helps him to realize his mistakes and change his ways. This transformation from self- centered to modest causes others to enjoy his presence. As Johnny’s life progresses, he learns to think before he acts.
