CIVIL WAR TIMELINE

 

1853   [Dec.10] Gadsden Psurchase Treaty: This treaty says that the United States acquires border territory from Mexico.

 

1854   [May 30] Kansas-Nebraska Act: This Act opened the Kansas territory for possible slavery.

 

1857   Dred Scott vs. Sanford Decision: This decision holds that Congress does not have the right to ban slavery.

 

1859   [Oct. 16] John Brown and 21 followers capture federal arsenal at an attempt to spark a slave revolt:  His calm defense during the trial won him sympathy from the North and led him to be known as a martyr.

 

1861   [Feb.8] Confederate States of America is established: The Confederate States were established because they were against slavery in the North.

 

1861   [April 12] Confederate States attack Fort Sumter: The attack of Fort Sumter sparked the beginning of the war.

 

1861-1865     Civil War: Conflict between the North and the South over the expansion of Slavery into Western States.

 

1863   [Jan.1] Emancipation Proclamation: This proclamation freed all the salves in the Confederate States

 

1863   [Jan.1] Homestead Act: The Homestead Act allowed settlers to claim land after they have lived on it for 5 years.

 

1863   [Nov.19] Gettysburg Address: The Gettysburg Address dedicated Gettysburg to the people that died in the war.

 

1865   [Dec. 6] 13th Amendment Is Ratified: The 13th Amendment was ratified, prohibiting slavery

 

1868   [July 9] 14th Amendment Is Ratified: The 14th Amendment was ratified, defining citizenship and privileges of citizens

 

1869   [May 10] Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads are joined at Promontory, Utah: Created the first trans-continental railroad.

 

1870   [Feb. 3] 15th Amendment Is Ratified: The 15th Amendment was ratified, giving blacks the right to vote.
